Sennelier oil pastels were created in 1949 at the behest of Pablo Picasso, a frequent visitor to the company’s flagship store in Paris. The Spaniard sought a medium that could be used freely on a variety of surfaces without fading or cracking.

Originally available in classic hues, the selection has expanded to 120 colours, each made from the highest quality pigments, a synthetic binding medium and mineral wax. The pastels are noted for their high pigment content and creamy texture.

Known to have been used by such artists as Cézanne, Monet, Gauguin, Matisse, Picasso, Bonnard, Modigliani, Chagall, Ernst, Hockney, Dali, Kandinsky and van Gogh; Sennelier is renowned as a world leader in the manufacture of paint, pastels and pigments. Gustave Sennelier opened his eponymous art store at 3 Quai Voltaire (in front of the Lourve and around the corner from the famed École des Beaux-Arts) in 1887. The brilliant chemist developed his own process for making oil paint at the back of the shop and gained a reputation for unparalleled quality.
